Dan Stefanski still remembers when the catfish died.

In 1995, Stefanski watched as a state employee raised a cage of catfish from the bottom of the River Raisin, where they'd been dropped the day before to test whether river sediment was contaminated with dangerous polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs.

All 29 catfish were dead.
