New Lake Erie Islands Ferry Service Should Be Running by July

Ferry service to the Lake Erie islands from the Cleveland area should be in operation by the Independence Day this summer. So far two companies have submitted individual bids of selling a boat to the Lorain Port Authority, and the authority's board will vote within a week on which bid to accept.

Wind business opening in town

Fellhauer Mechanical Systems owner John Fellhauer and Oak Harbor resident Curtis Stokes are teaming up to open SUREnergy -- which stands for Sustainable Use of Renewable Energy -- in the building behind Fellhauer's showroom on Gill Road.

Michigan Senate pushes for full funding of new Soo lock

The Michigan Senate Tuesday approved a resolution urging the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fully fund the expansion of the shipping locks at Sault Ste. Marie, said Sen. Jason Allen, who sponsored the measure.

Charlevoix lighthouse receives grant

The Charlevoix Historical Society was recently one of four groups across the state to receive combined grants of nearly $80,000.

Charlevoix’s portion—$29,666—has been designated for the society to repaint the interior of the lighthouse, a process which involves preparing the surface and dealing with lead paint abatement.

Port Huron to Mackinac Race: A bit of history from the days of the depression

The race hit a high of 20 yachts by 1928 but in 1929 when the depression started to dig in the entry list dwindled down to 13. That same year the Bayview clubhouse burned down on Motorboat Lane putting further financial strain on the organization. By 1930 entries climbed a little with the entry of BYC Commodore Alger Sheldon's Trident, a new John Alden built yawl specifically to win the Mackinac Race.

1st ship enters Seaway system

The CSL Spruceglen, of Canada, was the first ship to begin the trek through the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway this year.

The 50th shipping season opened this week and ships are beginning to steam through, but Seaway officials on both sides of the border are unsure how much the ships will carry this year.
