Pervious concrete -- made of gravel and cement minus the sand that gives regular concrete its impenetrable density -- has the porous quality of a Rice Krispies bar.

Environmentalists weigh in on carferry ash

Ludington Daily News - June 2

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was failing to enforce the Clean Water Act, one of three environmental organizations that sued the EPA and won told the Daily News Monday afternoon.

Because of the lawsuit, vessels now need to go through a permit process in order to discharge waste. The SS Badger is among those affected. It has a permit in the short term, but it will expire in 2012, when the EPA wants it to stop discharging ash — a byproduct of its coal-firing process — into Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan Carferry is working now to find a way either contain the ash and have it landfilled, find an alternative fuel source or switch to diesel engines.

In the last four years, Michigan's economy has contracted by 3.5 percent, and Ohio's by 0.5 percent. Indiana's economy was third-worst, but grew an anemic 0.1 percent during the four-year period.
