$3M Leland Harbor upgrade nears completion

A $3 million-plus renovation project at the Leland Harbor will cut into this year's boating season, but not by much.

The township received around $2.6 million in grant money from the Michigan State Waterways Commission to help pay for the project, to include a new boater services building with restrooms, showers, laundry facilities and an indoor lounge. The project also includes new floating docks, 22 additional slips and a new parking lot.

National Boating Day Gets OK from House of Reps, Set for July 1

The U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 410 which designates July 1, 2009 as National Boating Day in recognition of the important role recreational boating and the boating industry play in the lives and health of the nation’s 59 million boaters and the U.S. economy.

House Resolution 410 was introduced by Congressmen Ron Klein (D-Fla.) and Henry Brown (R-S.C.), along with Congressional Boating Caucus Co-Chairs Candice Miller (R-Mich.) and Gene Taylor (D-Miss.) and passed with 27 bipartisan co-sponsors. It must now move through the Senate before the President can issue a national proclamation in observance of the day.

Manitowoc greets idea of marine sanctuary with open arms

Representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Wisconsin Historical Society were met with open arms by area divers Wednesday, who seemed excited and pleased at the possibility of opening a marine sanctuary in the area around Lake Michigan.

Ellen Brody, the regional coordinator for the Great Lakes and Northeast Region for NOAA was grinning ear-to-ear after a successful hour-long meeting at Maritime Divers where locals seemed to embrace the possibility of a sanctuary.

Radio voices will carry at sailing regatta

Without color commentary, Tim Hunt believes golf would be nothing but the ding of a ball and auto racing nothing but the roar of an engine. So Hunt, commodore of the Buffalo Yacht Club, plans on adding some spice to his own sport this weekend.

At this year's Great Lakes International Challenge Cup, Hunt will have the sailors broadcast the races over an FM station. It's all part of an effort to spike the sport's popularity in Western New York.

Mackinac sailboat race registrations up slightly

With the economy throwing everything for a loop these days, Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race Chairman Frank Kern wouldn't venture an estimate as to how many boats would sign up this year.

But all in all, after 216 boats filed paperwork by Tuesday's deadline, Kern was pleased with the number for the July 25 race.

Ohio Lake Erie Commission Seeking Submissions from Shutterbugs

TOLEDO, OH – Camera buffs who want to capture the essence of Lake Erie life on film – or on memory card in this digital age – and share the wonders of the lake can enter the Ohio Lake Erie Commission (OLEC) 2009 photo contest. Winning images will be displayed as part of a traveling exhibit and in an online photo gallery.

The 2009 “Life on Lake Erie” photo contest is an opportunity for amateur photographers, age 18 and older, to reveal their passion for one of Ohio’s most valuable and dynamic natural features, Lake Erie. Photographs taken between July 9, 2008 and July 12, 2009 in and around the Lake Erie watershed can be submitted to the OLEC through July 16, 2009.

Submissions must be the original work of the photographer and can portray sustainable use, development or protection of Ohio’s Lake Erie coastal resources. They can incorporate shoreline landscapes, wildlife, plants or even people enjoying various coastal activities. Black and white and color photographs will be accepted. Digitally altered photos will not be accepted. All submissions become the property of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission.

Winning photographs will be featured on the OLEC web site and will be part of the Commission’s traveling photo gallery. The inspiring art display will appear at prime Ohio shoreline locations throughout the year, including University of Toledo’s Lake Erie Center in Oregon, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Oak Harbor and the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Welcome Centers in Port Clinton and Sandusky. The outstanding images may also be used to promote Lake Erie through environmental and educational programs and publications.

To enter, send a 5 x 7-inch print and a completed entry form, available at lakeerie.ohio.gov, to the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, One Maritime Plaza, Fourth Floor, Toledo, Ohio 43604. No more than five entries will be accepted from one household. Individuals can win up to two times.

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission was established for the purpose of preserving Lake Erie’s natural resources, protecting the quality of its waters and ecosystem, and promoting economic development in the region. The director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources serves as the commission’s chairman. Additional members include the directors of the state departments of Transportation, Health, Development, Agriculture and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Cheboygan issues absurd threat to stop proposed Genesee water pipeline

Genesee County's proposal to pipe its own water from Lake Huron received an expected - and way off-base - slam from the north this week.

Cheboygan County Drain Commissioner Dennis G. Lennox II threatens to file a lawsuit to stop a Genesee pipeline if the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality approves a permit for the project. He claims a new pipeline poses a threat to the future of Lake Huron.

Wind turbines could be on Great Lakes in 3 years

The first wind turbine development on the Great Lakes could be built within three years or so, experts on offshore wind power said during a conference Wednesday in Milwaukee.

The first project is expected to consist of three to five turbines just off the shore of Cleveland in Lake Erie.
