Six Marinas Join the Ranks of Certified Michigan Clean Marinas

The Michigan Clean Marina Program is pleased to announce six Michigan facilities have been certified as “Michigan Clean Marinas” effective June 18, 2009. They are Algonac Harbour Club in Algonac; Lac La Belle State Harbor in Lac La Belle; Copper Harbor State Dock in Copper Harbor; Eagle Harbor State Dock in Eagle Harbor; Cedar River State Harbor in Cedar River; and Torresen Marine in Muskegon. With the additions of these six marinas, a total of 30 Michigan marinas have obtained this prestigious certification.

“As general manager I was really excited to hear that Algonac Harbor Club had received Clean Marina Certification. It gives me a great sense of pride and satisfaction, that we are a part of the overall effort to clean Michigan’s water, and maintain it,” said William Coughlin, Algonac Harbour Club. “I am very grateful to the owners of Algonac Harbour Club for providing the resources, and our employees for the hard work necessary to have accomplished this goal. All of us need to remain focused on working to sustain a ‘greener’ Michigan. Our lakes and waterways are priceless natural resources, which need to be preserved for generations to come.”

The clean marina certification begins with a pledge to participate in the program, followed by workshops where the marina management and staff receive a handbook, overview of the designation process and a review of best management practices. The facilities then conduct self-evaluations of their environmental practices to determine their strengths and weaknesses. After implementing improvements and reaching a level of competencies, the marina requests a visitation by a CMP consultant to evaluate the facility’s environmental stewardship. When the facility reaches established goals, they receive their designation.

“We are pleased that more Michigan marinas and harbors are working toward clean marina certification and thirty have already achieved this recognition,” said Van W. Snider, Jr., CAE, President of Michigan Boating Industries Association. “We are also encouraged that more boaters are becoming aware of the program and are searching out these facilities as places they want to utilize.” The Clean Marina designation is applicable for a three-year period at which time the facility must be re-designated.

The Michigan Clean Marina Program is a joint program between the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Sea Grant and Michigan Boating Industries Association. Townsend bill would eliminate boat sales tax

reporter - june 30

State Rep. John Townsend, R-Fond du Lac, plans to introduce a bill designed to stimulate sales of motorboats — a yearlong moratorium on state sales tax on up to $30,000 of purchases.

“The first practical outboard motor was invented in Wisconsin,” Townsend said. “Wisconsin is still the only state where outboard motors are produced. There’s Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac, of course, and there is also the Evinrude plant in Sturtevant, by Racine. This bill would eliminate a significant barrier to motorboat ownership for the next year.”

The federal government on Monday agreed to put gray wolves in the western Great Lakes region back on the endangered species list — at least temporarily.

The decision came less than two months after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service discontinued federal protection for about 4,000 wolves in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The agency acknowledged Monday that it erred by not holding a legally required public comment period before taking action.
