Bayfield County project gets federal funding for fish habitat

The first of what’s hoped to become a steady stream of federal money to restore fish habitat is helping expand a grassroots effort on Bayfield County’s Eau Claire Chain of Lakes.

The $15,000 in federal funding will enable the “Fish Sticks” project partners – the Eau Claire Conservation Club, the Eau Claire Property Owners Association, Bayfield Land and Water Conservation Department and the Department of Natural Resources -- to expand their work with willing landowners to place trees from upland sources in shallow water in front of their properties. The trees will provide important spawning habitat for fish, insects for them, and hiding places in areas where much of this critical habitat had previously been removed.

U.S. EPA's Region 5 Awards Almost $4.2 million in Recovery Act Funding to Illinois EPA to Reduce Diesel Emissions and Create Jobs

In a move that stands to create jobs, boost local economies, reduce diesel emissions and protect human health and the environment for the people of Illinois, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded almost $4.2 million to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to clean up on-and off-road diesel vehicles and equipment in the state. These clean diesel projects will create jobs while protecting Illinois' air quality.

"Investing in clean diesel projects in the Great Lakes region will protect public health, bolster the economy and create green jobs," said Bharat Mathur, acting regional administrator. "These Recovery Act funds will move us one step closer to a clean energy future."

SDG gives $1 million to St. Lawrence River Institute

Citing its important environmental contributions, the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) will direct $1 million in tax dollars over the next 10 years to the 15-year-old St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences based in Cornwall.

“The River Institute is an amazing centre that is doing influential work in the field of freshwater science,” explained Chris McDonell, Deputy-Mayor of the Township of North Glengarry and SDG warden for 2009.

More chances to fly in WW II-era transport plane

A Chicago-area aviation group plans to extend its public flight schedule throughout the summer after overwhelming interest in a World War II war bird, a replica of the Black Sparrow.

Since April, more than 150 people -- including aviation buffs, curious airplane neophytes and an occasional WW II veteran -- have strapped into the restored 1945 vintage Douglas C-47 aircraft for half-hour sightseeing flights over the south suburbs and Chicago skyline. And dozens of people are on a waiting list, organizers said.

Columbus replica ships in Marinette for tours

The two sailing ships docked in Marinette this week may not be searching for the New World, but the replicas of Christopher Columbus' NiƱa and Pinta offer visitors a chance to explore the history of these sailing vessels.

The two floating museums arrived in Marinette on Tuesday afternoon and will remain docked at Nestegg Marine, 300 Wells St., through early Monday. The ships are open to the public for self-guided tours starting today. It's the first year both ships are sailing together in the Great Lakes, said senior captain Morgan Sanger.

Proposed Quebec water diversion includes 11 hydro plants, 3,000 MW

A report by an independent institute proposes diverting flood waters from three northern Quebec rivers to generate 14 terawatt-hours annually at 11 hydro plants and to sell 25 billion cubic meters of water each year.

The so-called Northern Waters project is proposed in an economic note by the Montreal Economic Institute, a non-partisan, not-for-profit research and education organization. MEI describes itself as "suggesting reforms for wealth creation based on market mechanisms."

Iron ore shipments from Twin Ports worst since '30s

By at least one economic measure, the Great Recession is approaching the Great Depression in Duluth.

Shipping organizations reported Tuesday that iron ore shipments from the Twin Ports have declined by nearly two-thirds this season, hitting levels not seen since the 1930s.
